ARTIST BIO

Natsumi Goldfish is a Japanese visual artist based in New York City. She was born and raised on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan. Her early environment, situated between urban and suburban landscapes where nature and the city coexist, made a lasting impression on her creative practice. This dialogue between the natural and urban worlds continues to be a central theme in her work.

Growing up between an outside world without clear borders and people shaped by complex personal boundaries, she developed an interest in pluralism—a state of "being both and in between"—as well as the idea that "everything is connected to everything else." These concepts continue to inform her artistic practice. Through her work, Natsumi explores the porous boundary between humanity and nature, inviting viewers to reconsider where one ends and the other begins.

In her practice, Natsumi creates paintings that explore man-made, intimate spaces—such as fish tanks, bathtubs, and windows—as symbols of human presence. These spaces are rendered as both realistic and dreamlike, existing somewhere between reality and imagination. Her work is rooted in an interest in conscious and unconscious human behavior, informed by both historical contexts and her own personal experiences.

Natsumi received her B.A. in Art from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2013. She has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo and New York City, and her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions. Selected publications include Hyperallergic, OXYGEN Magazine, VoyageLA Magazine, CanvasRebel Magazine, Studio Visit Magazine, and Whitehot Magazine.
